Why New Nissan Cars Are So Bad, What Went Wrong

Why New Nissan Cars Are So Bad, What Went Wrong

rev up your engines, welcome to my
Thursday video where I answer one of you viewers questions with an entire video,
and today’s question comes from Harry Lopez what do you think about the older
model Nissans before the Renault merger, were they good cars comparable to
the Toyotas and Hondas at that time, yes Nissans were better made cars back then,
up to the late 90s here’s a history of the Nissan Company to show you what happened, when I
was a young mechanic Nissan wasn’t even called Nissan it was called Datsun it
wasn’t until 1984 that the company changed its name to Nissan and
hilariously enough it cost the company 30 million dollars to change all the
signs on their dealerships from Datsun to Nissan, now those early Datsuns, they
could last a long time they had kind of two setups, the early ones like the
Datsun b210 they had tiny little engines, they didn’t cost much and they could last a
really long time, lots of my customers back then, hey they had a Datsun b210 as
a car they used in college I had one customer that had 400,000 miles on
one, they were little cars but hey they could run quite well if you didn’t mind
a little car and fixing them was a simple easy job, even rebuilding the
engine was pretty cheap, I had a customer with one the whole engine was rebuilt for
like 300 bucks and then it ran like a clock there were pretty dependable
little cars, but if you know anything about Datsun and Nissan whatever you
want to call them, they started to get into speed, the first real speed burner
the late sixties Skyline GTR that was a little bitty car but it put on 160
horsepower which was a lot for a light little car and that led to a whole range
of skylines, they even made station wagons and if you know anything about drift and hey
a lot of guys love those skylines turn them into drifter cars, they may be small
but they got a lot of power in them you can also mod them and they were very
popular car even today, as far as I’m concerned first real big hit Nissan
had was the 240z, that was the first real japanese mass-produced great sports car
back in the 60’s sports cars were known as fun to drive but they break all the time,
they’d leak oil, now with this Datsun 240z those things just could run for ever
with very little maintenance and people who knew about sport cars were amazed
because they said, whoa here’s a quick little car, it doesn’t leak oil starts every
time and gets pretty good gas mileage and of course they kept perfecting them
then they came out with the 260z the 280z the 300z they’re pretty
good sports cars there’s no arguing that they sold a lot of them, so Nissan hey
there were the ones that really perfected a mass-produced sports car,
much like Honda when they made just motorcycles, they perfected the
four-cylinder motorcycle before the Honda 750 made inroads as a speed burner
that could run forever, always start and not leak oil, people thought of motorcycles
as yeah they’re fast but they’re noisy and they leak oil and they break all the
time, Honda turned that on its head they made a fast motorcycle that could last
indefinitely with a little bit of care so Nissan really started the Japanese
mass-produce sports car market as far as I’m concerned, but the company
made various mistakes here and there as time went on, it was pretty much in the
rumor mill that the company it was up for sale, Ford was thinking about buying
it, but Ford had some problems and their stock went down and that deal fell
through, but in 1999 Renault kind of merged with Nissan, they didn’t buy them
it’s kind of a merger that Renault owns 45% of Nissan or something and Nissan
owns a percentage of them, it’s a really complicated deal, basically putting a
French car company in the mix the Japanese car company, now I know some
people like French cars I recently came from a trip to England and a lot of
people there drive French cars and they like them, but in the United States, French cars have
always been dismal failures, all the French manufacturers have tried to sell
cars in United States they all pulled out they had bad sales, people didn’t
know how to fix the cars, parts were expensive and hard to get, as far as I’m
concerned when Renault and Nissan when they merged,
not such a hot deal for Nissan because before 1999, cars like the Nissan Altima
they’re little bitty Nissan Sentra, hey those things were pretty solid built,
they could last a long time but in the 2000s a lot of Nissans started having
problems with engines wearing out prematurely and especially with bad
automatic transmissions that would wear out and cost a fortune to repair, and
heaven forbid you buy a late-model Nissan with a CVT transmission, those have
got to be the worst ones that are manufactured in the world as far as I
can tell, they’re always breaking in cars that my customers have, I get many times
people come and they’ll say what’s wrong with this Nissan and I’ll say, well
your CVT transmissions going out and some will say well you know I already
had it replaced once or they’ll say, gee I only got 60,000 miles and the
transmission is going out already, and that’s the reason I tell people not to
buy Nissans anymore the quality just isn’t what it used to be, it used to be
really well built cars they could last a long time you good a little bit Datsun
b210, a Nissan Sentra and yeah they were small cars and they rode a little bit
rough, but they’re pretty zippy for a small car could last a long time and
their sports cars back then we’re state-of-the-art, the ones today I see many
problems with their transmissions and their engines blowing head gasket, and they have
electrical problems and even simple things like, I’ve had customers with them
that the vehicles were like two years old and the mufflers rusted and fell off,
because look up my 25 year old Toyota Celica, it’s still got the original muffler on
it and it doesn’t leak and make noise and I mean they couldn’t make one that
lasted two or three years before when they welded it together
it was cheaply welded and it rotted and fell off, and their general design seemed
to get worse and worse, on a late-model Altima I had to change a blower motor,
to change the blower motor on any of these Toyotas normally I can do it in 15 minutes,
it was a six-hour job on that Altima because you had to take everything in the dash out to get to the blower motor instead of just having it at a nice
place with three little screws you take out and pop the motor in and out, so yes
Nissan used to make really good cars but after that merger with Renault, not so much, and
since this is the Thursday segment where I answer a viewers question, place your
own question on the YouTube comments below and I’ll pick the best ones to
make a single video to answer your question, and where
else can you find a guy with 50 years experience of fixing cars to answer your
own question with a video, so if you never want to miss another one of my new
car repair videos, remember to ring that Bell!

  2. I was considering a 2017 Nissan maxima platinum, my favorite thing about it is the seat comfort and the extended lumber support that I've never seen before. My previous car was an awesome 2018 mazda6 reserve. Not as comfortable but I great car. I just survived a headon collision.

  3. I NEED TO KNOW HOW THE NISSAN EXTERRA HOLDS UP! I’ve been looking at a 2011 exterra and want to know what I do with it when I buy it to fix it

  4. I had an Infinity for 10 years and then jumped into a 2014 Altima and never had a problem with the engine. I put 100,000 on the Infiniti and 50,000 on the Altima, all I do is drive. In my experience, they hold up pretty well.

  5. don’t want the full video lol but scotty i’m thinking about buying a 07/08 350z, manual of corse but do you think that a good car for a daily to slightly modify?

  6. iM AT 189K on my Altima 2012 and never had one single mechanical failure or issues but how would i know if my transmission was bad? i just assumed that being a high mileage car, that I wouldnt get the zippy fast acceleration as when it had 22k on it. idk

  7. How can I prevent my CVT transmission from going out?

Okay, I bought a brand new Nissan Rogue last year that now has 25,000 miles. Come to find out it has a CVT transmission. Wasn't aware of the bad reputation then for CVT transmissions. I have no problem with it now but would like to know what I can do to make the CVT last longer.

  8. I have a 2008 Cts Cadillac, it runs good but they have a hard time (I'm having a hard time aligning the dam thing). It's hard zeroing the tires so they wear well. Had it at a shop they saw the wear on the inside of the tires,And changed them but did not zero them to stop the wear. So i have been working on them. Got it close but still not perfect. Never have I had a problem like this on all my cars . And I have had a few. You asked to hear a problem. I have fixed everything else, have you any knowledge on this Thanks , your great

  9. I had a Datsun F10 that had a unique design. It was a manual transmission but it was designed in such a way that you could change the clutch in a half hour without removing the engine or transmission. I wonder why they still don't do that? Maybe they were trying to mimic the philosophy of the VW bug, making it easier to do DIY repairs?

  10. My mom has a 2016 Nissan Sentra. Should she sell the car before the transmission goes out cos she will be pissed

  11. What everyone wants now a days are cars you can buy and never do maintenance on and expect it to last over 300k miles if you neglect maintenance no car will last

  12. This he's really got it some big jokes about it Nissan cars their are good cars runs really good I own a Altima 4 5 years never had any mechanic proble it go's everyday fast I love it🤔😎

  13. I had a 1972 Datsun 510, 4 cyl… drove it for 14 years, replaced u-joints, brakes, and a battery… my best car ever, it ran like a top the entire time, I finally gave it away when I was in college.

  14. My 2000 Nissan Xterra lasted 14 years. My current 2006 Nissan Altima is at 161,000 miles but I'm currently getting p0302 error (cylinder 2 misfire). Already replaced sparkplugs. I'm going to replace the fuel injectors and hopefully it will help. If not, it may mean a soon end. I won't spend big bucks to fix it. With my 2006 Altima, I did everything myself and replaced an engine mount, replaced a rusted out floorboard, replaced a rusted out exhaust flex pipe and did basic maintenance. NY weather is rough on undercarriage. Was pretty happy with Altima but considering Toyota Corolla next time as Scotty raves about it's durability and easier maintenance. I am a Nissan fan but want to try Toyota.

  15. I have an 88 Yugo GVL. Still runs and drives. Brakes just failed on me. I think its the master cylinder. What did/do you think of the Yugo? Worst car in History?

  16. buddy had a 2014 altima and got posted half way across the country the engine literally caught fire 4 hours into the drive. nissan has truley fallen and in my opinion is worse than even chrysler. only toyata, honda, and sometimes ford do i trust now and even with them never a cvt

  17. New Nissans aren't any worse than new Toyotas and Subarus. In fact, Nissan doesn't routinely shaft their customers on warranty work like Honda, Toyota, and Subaru do. I'd rather have a Nissan that can get fixed instead of a Honda that can't.

  18. Scotty, Nissan is a bad car? If you maintain a car it will last a long time. I like the CVT personally. Change the fluid every 30k miles will ensure it will last a very long time. My wife had an Acura RDX and the transmission had to be replaced with only 35k miles on it. It was under warranty so i was glad to get a brand new one

  19. Renault had a bad name in the UK for poor electrics and silly faults that had to be taken to a garage. They sell fewer cars now. Many auto transmissions were crap in the UK some by VW , some by Ford. Stick with manual unless you are disabled. When I visit the US I have to rent an auto but it is not the same a real driving.

  20. Scotty, I got an oddball question for ya: what's the history of limos (of varying types)? How long did they last to ur knowledge?

  21. i know youre not a fan of any of the german cars but out of audi, bmw porsche and mercedes what is the best (of the worst?) out of them.

  22. I can give some of Chryslers products the credit that atleast for how unreliable they are, they are some of the best looking vehicles I see on the roads. Especially their Jeeps, Ram 1500, Charger, Challenger, and Durango. If nothing, they are visually appealing. But Nissans these days aren’t even appealing to look at in any way AND are unreliable. No model is appealing with the exception of the GT-R. They are all either atrocious or as boring as my refrigerator. So why even buy a Nissan? You may as well buy a bag full of s*** and have just as much appeal from it.

  23. He’s dumb he knows nothing what he’s talking about. Do something with your life like actually make a video of you fixing a car not talking.

  24. It’s funny seeing the comments of Nissan fans. Sorry but Nissan is cheap and unreliable aka the poor mans car. If you want quality and reliabilty buy a Toyota or Honda.

  25. My son recently purchased a 05 4 liter pathfinder, when he bought it home it had front end noise. They had just had it in the shop to have timing components changed. @ 170,000 miles. We tore it down and found the changed the chains & nothing else. We replaced all chains guides tensioner's sprockets & replaced gaskets on both oil gallery covers replaced oil pump. Got it together and it ran quiet and great. The issue is after 30 min of driving at idle the oil pressure drops low enough that the actual low oil pressure light comes on. I changed the rod & main bearings thinking that they was worn and bleeding off oil pressure at the crank. Plastic gauged and they was worn. It helped no more oil light. But its still showing th he needle is dropping to second line from the bottom. I've read that 05 &06 had a what they called true oil pressure sending unit and that it is normal. Is this true. I haven't put a actual oil pressure gauge on it. Can I put a oil pressure sending unit on it from a 07 or newer where they supposedly went to a less accurate sending unit and make it stop dropping so low just for my OCD. Have you had any dealings with this?

  26. People buy the CHEAPEST models of a brand and think the entire Brand is trash, Go buy the cheapest models of Audi , Subaru , Bmw,, Volvo, Ford and judge, By that standard EVERY automotive brand is TRASH

  27. I had a 1985 Nissan 300ZX, it was the year after they were still referred to as Datsun/Nissan.. Yep, they actually once had both names on the badge before they completely switched to Nissan.. Anyways, this car was excellent. It had an automatic 4 speed transmission that could really take a beating. This car was so strong that even though the water pump seized, which detached the enormous fan blade, causing it to cut every possible belt under the hood as well as cutting the radiator,,, the car was still running and driving,,lol I drove it to a mechanic and he fixed the car for $300…. He commented that he was astonished that the car's engine was entirely unaffected by this happening..He said it was an amazing vehicle to take such punishment and to be able to shrug it off.

  28. They merged in 1999, but when exactly did the nissan vehicles begin to deteriate in quality and reliability? In other words, what years should I stay away from? Beginning 2006 I suppose?

  29. I have a nissan titan with 270k miles. Never had a problem. Wife had a 2004 armada two issues but took it to 200k. Bought another Armada. The key with nissan is simple. Three models that are well built. Frontier, Armada, Titan. Stay away from the CVT!!!!.

  30. The biggest problem with Nissan is their dipstick location. It’s absolutely murder without a flashlight and patience to check oil on new pathfinders. Don’t get me started on the cabin air filter.

  31. My 2015 Altima something loses power, for example I might be in A Stop light or going uphill then when I Accelerate it Takes 3-5 Seconds for the car to move and when it Starts Moving the RPM is real hi but the Speed of the car is Not fast. So what I have to do is park the car or turn it of in the other stop Light so it can go back to Normal…

  32. Scotty kilmer
Do you think the new nissan Versa and Sentra 2020 with CVT transmition will have the same transmition problems.

  33. Let me tellyou Nissan is just the worst piece of s*** you can never buy the special is Nissan morano your transmission will die almost grantee before 50,000 miles!!! You still don't believe me go and buy one then pay $5000 for new transmission , Scotty's absolutely right even Kia / Hyundai is much better then Nissan !!!

  34. I have owned multiple Nissans and never had 1 issue. I’ve always gone with them over the competition because of the looks. Currently driving a 2018 Maxima. Still not 1 issue. (Knocks on wood)

  35. I just bought a 2005 standard transmission Nissan 350Z coupe. It was purchased new by a lady and has 68,000 miles on it. I know you don’t like nissan vehicles after 1999 but could you give me your opinion of this car.

  36. hey scotty have you come around a 2009 nissan murano that shuts down like the battery is dead and won't start up. peaple are saying to replace the break light switch… any suggestions

  37. Scotty, with the 10 year 120,000 mile CVT warranty fro NISSAN, it does not matter to me. It is my in town car for gas mileage so I will be warrantied for 10 years. How many beloved wonderful Toyotas have that kind of transmission warranty? As for the engine, it is a great engine.

  38. 2015 Nissan Xterra Pro-4X: what is the real reason they killed the Xterra? What do you think of the Xterra as a vehicle overall? I own one and have been happy with it as a 4WD. So far I have 42,000 mile on my 2015; any tips on what I should look out for. Thanks I enjoy your channel and the your wealth of knowledge and experience.

  39. The once proud days of Nissan / Datsun are over. The criminal indictments of former CEO Carlos Ghosn, poor sales, dependence low margin fleet vehicle units to prop up the numbers and even my own poor service experience at Texas Nissan of Grapevine tells the story. Gone is the undying focus on quality which has been supplanted by the commoditization of their autos in an effort to beat the substandard Korean brands. This leaves only Toyota and to some degree Honda to carry the quality torch among the Deming legacy auto makers.

  40. I have a 100k on my 13 sentra. 🙁 my cvt was fine…. the taillight had moisture in it causing the CVT to act weird (dealer wanted to put new transmission in)… 60 bucks later, car runs great.. Something in the circuit is connected to the transmission… weird right. but all in all I like it. I did change 3 wheel bearing assembly's…… but they were easy to change.

  41. 89 nissan sunny (max speed at 150kph. dead at 300000km)
    93 powerpickup… still running at 400000Km (max at 120kph)
12 urvan estate at 120000Km (max at 140KPh)
    19 terra at 10000Km (max at 210kph)
19 urvan premium (NV 350) at 6000km (max at 160KPh.)

fair in speed. best aircon. the rest dont matter.

give you feedback of juke, patrol and gtr (as soon as i buy and test them).

  42. I disagree I think Nissan are great long lasting vehicles my family has had 2 Nissan's growing up as a kid I'm 30yo they sold them to get a newer Nissan its 2019 and we still have a 2000 Sentra that runs like new 0 problems with it same engine and transmission I have a 2013 Altima and I've had 0 problems my parents also have a 2015 Altima and they rather drive the 2000 Sentra people just have to drive right and treat it with love change the oil and stay on top of the maintenance.

  43. Hey Scotty a question on which car you'd keep. I live in Hamilton Ontario near Toronto. I have a 2013 Lexus Is250 AWD automatic with 55,000 miles and a 2012 Honda Civic Coupe manual with 74,000 miles. Which one would you keep and which one to sell. Plan on keeping the car until its done.

  44. Which Nissan should you buy? NONE! The CTV transmission can go out as early as 20,000 miles! They are complete POS! I have a 2016 Rogue S with a junk CVT transmission! I am selling it for $7500 and it is like new inside and out engine runs like new ac works as does everything else. Google Nissan CVT trans problems! And remember NEVER BUY A NISSAN! I am SO SORRY I did! I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER NISSAN!

  45. Sold my 2018 Camry that I bought brand new…The transmission is junk…and YES I did have it flashed at the dealer… Bought the 2017 SE instead …heavenly… For me to sell my new car and buy and older one is unheard of..until the 2018 Camry

  46. Can you do a segment on the 2017 and up niassan titan? I have a 17 Nissan Titan Platinum Reserve and I Love it. I feel it is a very strong, reliable and affordable truck compared to its competition. But I would like your thoughts on it. Thanks

  47. Love your videos Scotty. Glad you say it like it is.
I got a 2005 Nissan Xterra… have never done much work on it, got it used with 140,000 miles on it, it now has 169,000 and still running great. All I've done to it was replace 2 sensors and changed plugs and 2 plug solenoids. Never had a transmission problem or radiator leek. Should I be thinking of replacing the radiator just in case? I heard some real horror stories on it leaking in to the transmission.

  48. I still can’t believe people waste their money on Nissan vehicles. A company with no innovation, cars all look the same and corrupt management. Toyota is busy bringing out new tech like the new RAV4 Prime, fuel cells etc. Nissan is just there.

  49. My 2015 Altima made me go bankrupt cvt replaced 3 times almost every 25k miles and I was an uber driver I couldn't work during repairs spent more time in the shop than the actual work my girlfriend left me being broke now I became a company semi truck driver do you think I will ever buy any Nissan product even if it is free. I really don't want to kill myself because of a car draining my finances. I can't even advise Nissan to my enemies.

  50. my 2005 nissan maxims is complete trash. started burning oil at 67,000 miles and it's at 71,000 miles currently and its going to the mechanic tomorrow, my transmission might be shot.

  51. 240Z was a OK, but I owned and maintained a B210. Valves burnt on these cars often. And rebuilding the carbs was no fun. Manual trans was also weak. Datsun/Nissan motto, "We're no worse than anybody else." I bought two new Camrys in 2001. I have had many more free weekends over the last 18 years. Love your videos! You are a treasure to the DIY crowd.
