Hello everyone, my name is Hugo Barat I’m 18 years old and I ride a bike with a left arm and a prosthesis. I started riding at a very young age, around 5 years old on a field that my grandfather had designed, this is where my brother and I did our first races. We then practiced sidecar cross following in the footsteps of our great grandfather, grandfather and father, all French champions in this sport. After our first year in the French championship and having won several podiums, we went to a World championship event in Switzerland in Roggenburg, qualified on Saturday, we took part in the first round on Sunday and after 15 minutes racing in top 15 we crashed in a strange way on a high speed descent. In the fall we make barrels and the side car falls back on my right arm, breaking several bones, cutting several arteries and cutting nerves I was rushed to the nearest hospital in Basel. I had several surgeries and ended up with an emergency amputation due to sepsis that developed. Not being able to do sidecar cross anymore, I went back to a motorcycle. I had the chance the chance to be fitted later with a special prosthesis for the bike and bicycle. And after some training to get used to accelerating with my left hand and wearing this prosthesis, I’m back ! So to put my prosthesis on it’s simple, I have a sleeve system that puts on my arm At the end of this sleeve I have like a screw thread. So I engage with the screw, I clip Then I have a strap that allows me to hold the prosthesis in place. when I pull on the bike, for jumps, in the waves no matter, in turns too I have curls “up” on each side Its actually the strap that comes to wear in my place there its put And you see, it’s the strap that presses on my back that simply carries the prosthesis. So that I can ride a motorcycle we made some modification So I have my gas handle on the left, normally you know that it was on the right, we moved it to the left. There I have the front brake lever that we moved too, normally it’s to the right, that we moved to the left you see The start and stop buttons have also been moved So we made everything available so that I could start and accelerate as I please while having the protection. Here we put a steering block absorber because on one arm I guide more, thanks to that I guide less We also have a Reckluse automatic clutch that allows me to have my front brake lever and not get confused with just one arm having both the clutch and the front brake. So the way I can shift gears But I don’t need to engage and that’s not bad And that’s it, the rest, I’m in charge of it myself. I also wanted to convey a message to everyone who is in a complicated situation. Don’t give up ! Believe in yourself, in your qualities. It was not always easy for me, I had to work hard to regain balance learn to walk again, learn to run again, to write with my left hand. Many encouraged me to stop the bike, many told me that it was impossible with one arm. But by dint of perseverance I proved them wrong because I drive much faster than some “valid” Don’t lose hope, keep moving forward and new doors will open.
