Hello everyone Today I’ll show you how to check and adjust valve clearances My bike is KTM XC-F 250 2012 Measuring the valve clearance procedure is identical for many motorcycles, so you can use this video as manual for your motorcycle First of all you need to remove seat, plastics and gas tank On KTM SXF XCF I recommend to remove this reinforcing metal brackets too Remove engine breather tube Remove valve cover Before any works I highly recommend to wash your engine or all bike. You don’t need any dirt inside your engine Before I continue I want to tell you about tools you need to this project Here you can see all the tools First of all you need the wrenches It can be ratchet or t-handle You need torque wrench for shure I use Taiwan torque wrench by Xite Good and not expensive tool With 2-20 Nm range Feeler gauges is needed I have 3 different types Feeler gauges can be strait … or with bend blades Bend blades can be more comfortable Because many engines have very tight space for your measurement tools And usually you have to bend your strait blades to check valve clearance End of the blade can be wide or tapered In many cases tapered blades will be more comfortable Micrometer is measure valve shims thikness I have to use it cause marks on my shims were unreadable I use this digital caliper and this analog to double-check measurements Here is Hotcams valve shim kit You can buy separate shims after measurements is done or have all shims you may need in one set Magnetic pickup tool is really useful tool in your workshop Pen, paper and service manual will be useful That’s all. Lets go After valve cover is removed Set up Top Dead Center (TDC) On the left side remove ignition cover plug Use 14 mm socket to rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise … … until camshaft gear marks will opposite each other Service manual says exhaust valve clearance should be 0.12 – 0.18 mm Intake valve clearance should be 0.10 – 0.15 mm You can use feeler gauge blades thickness as reference point My feeler gauge has 0.10, 0.13, 0.15, 0.18 mm blades So I will use 0.15 mm blade for exhaust valves and 0.13 mm blade for intake For those who are confused about valves … In most cases exhaust valves placed at the front of engine where the exhaust pipe is located Intake valves placed at the back of engine where carburetor or EFI unit connected Lets start measurements I start with exhaust valves As I said before I’ll use 0.15 mm blade as reference point Where the blade should be placed? Place the blade between camshaft (round metal piece) and valve lever So I try to place 0.15 mm blade … And it does not fit So I try thinner 0.13 mm blade 0.13 mm blade fit well Double checking So my right exhaust valve gap is 0.13-0.14 mm The same procedure for the left exhaust valve Me left exhaust valve clearance is 0.08 mm Repeat for intake valves For intake valves a have 0.12 mm gap Write your current measurements Write the required values on second raw You can find it in service manual Now you can compare measured gaps with recommended If you current gaps are beyond the valves clearance limit You should change your valve shims In 3rd row current shims width should be written In 4th row you calculate new shim widths To change valve shims disassembly timing drive For that loose chain adjuster There is mechanic chain tensioner So I need only loose the bolt If you have automatic chain tensioner You need to remove it Bla-bla-bla … some unimportant thoughts about automatic chain tensioners After the timing chain is loosen Remove 8 bolts and upper part of bridge Be careful and don’t drop bolts inside the engine Remove the bridge Remove intake and exhaust camshafts Here you can see the valve levers and under it the valve shims Remove valve shims you need to change So in 3rd row I write the widths of the shims If width marks is unreadable use micrometer to measure it Now let’s do some math My measured intake valve gap is 0.10 mm According to the service manual recommended gap is 0.10 – 0.15 mm and I choose average value 0.13 mm Also because one of my feeler gauge blades width is 0.13 mm So I need to increase the gap by 0.03 mm … For that valve shim width should be reduced For increase the gap use thiner shim and vice versa My current right intake shim is 2.20 2.20 mm – 0.03 mm=2.17 mm So my new intake shims should be 2.17 mm Calculate another shims in the same manner Lets find new shims If there is no shim that you need, take the nearest size Magnet tool is very helpful Install new shims And again … don’t drop shims inside the engine … otherwise you may do the new engine bottom rebuild project 🙂 Keep you working space and engine clean Use the rag to remove dirt and old engine oil Camshaft installation Don’t forget about TDC marks AIt should point to each other Add some fresh engine oil Install the bridge Install 8 bolts with proper torque For KTM SXF reccomended torque is 15 Nm Tighten chain tensioner or install it if you have automatic one. Read service manual for instructions Chain should be tight, but not to much You need to check valve clearances again Rotate crankshaft 2-3 times with wrench. You can use kickstarter as well Set the TDC (Top Dead Center) Finally check valve clearances I got 0.15 mm on right exhaust valve and 0.14 on the left. Whats OK Intake gaps is 0.13 both Final step – assemble all the parts back

  6. видел это видео когда еще имел другой мот где клапана настраиваются архаично – подумал, хорошо что мне это не грозит, пусть мучаются с этими шайбами и таблицей умножения =) А теперь 5 клапанная яманана, сижу и думаю какой же я продумано что на твой канал подписался, все так по свойски объяснено – низкий поклон =).

  7. 11:35 а вот тут ты не прав, стоковый вынимается нормально, а перед снятием натяжителя надо заблокировать колено чтоб не ушли фазы

  8. Парни! Вычислить размер новой шайбы удобно по формуле для регулировки клапанов на ваз 21083. B+A-C=Н где В-толщина старой шайбы А-измеренный зазор С-нужный зазор Н-толщина новой шайбы.

  9. У кого не было альфы, тот нихрена не поймёт, а альфа была почти у всех!
